THE NICE GUYS

Augustman - - Prelude -

Everybody loves a good mystery. Throw in a pair of investigators with conflicting personalities, an evil mastermind, and some fiery explosions, and you get what has come to be known as a buddy cop movie. Over the years we’ve become acquainted with the genre through classics like Lethal Weapon, Tango and Cash, and 48 Hours. This month Shane Black (who directed Iron Man 3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) brings us The Nice Guys. It’s a buddy cop comedy that finds an unlikely pairing in Holland March, a down-on-his-luck private eye played by Ryan Gosling, and Jackson Healy, a brutish hired enforcer played by Russell Crowe. The film, which takes place in the 1970s, sees these two bumbling characters attempt to solve the case of a missing girl named Amelia, played by Margaret Qualley. As fate would have it, they uncover a disturbing conspiracy that involve some of the most powerful people in Los Angeles. Recent buddy cop movies like Let’s Be Cops and Ride Along have been whimsical at best, but there’s something about the chemistry between Gosling and Crowe that makes this one more promising. Let’s hope they prove us right.
