THE VALUE OF HUMAN TOUCH

- WORDS AMOS CHIN PHOTOS DOLCE & GABBANA

Dolce & Gabbana committed itself to fatto a mano – which means “made by hand” in Italian – for its Mediterranean-style collection Parco dei Principi

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS that define luxury brands? Extravagant. Exquisite. Exclusive. Take away any of these ex- factors and upmarket brands likely lose their lustre. In this new era of luxury fashion, artisanal craftsmanship is what lets brands achieve a new level of exclusivity. And when it comes to craftsmanship, Italian artistry has led the way since Renaissance times, offering the Da Vincian combination of technical excellence and artistry that combines science and culture, history and heritage.

For the spring/summer 2021, Dolce & Gabbana celebrates artisanal handicrafts or fatto a mano, by offering techniques best articulated in the Italian tradition of passion and care. Fatto a mano is what made the “Made in Italy” one of the most covetable in fashion in the modern world. And it resides in the very DNA of Dolce & Gabbana.

As a brand that takes pride in unique aesthetics that are evocative of a carefree Mediterranean spirit, Dolce & Gabbana continues to embrace its Sicilian foundations of style and elegance. Drawing inspiration from the ceramic tiles at the Parco Dei Principi Hotel, designed by famed architect Gio Ponti in the 1960s, Dolce & Gabbana’s new collection sees silk shirting, trousers, caftans, sarongs and knitted tops feature

A PALETTE OF WHITE, BLUE AND TOUCHES OF GOLD WERE IS PRESENTED THROUGH A MIX OF UNUSUAL VOLUMES AND IDIOSYNCRATIC SILHOUETTES, INSPIRED BY THE SHAPES OF THE ARCHITECTURE

intricate blue tile tessellation. A palette of white, blue and touches of gold is presented through a mix of unusual volumes and idiosyncratic silhouettes, inspired by the shapes of the architecture.

Italian architecture was also translated into material layering, creating a new definition for tailoring. From formal suit jackets featuring back inserts of knitwear to multi-material tailored trousers, the brand has infused classicism with a plethora of contemporary twists.

The shirt and the jacket ‒ those formal and timeless pieces of a man’s wardrobe ‒ are reinvented following new inspirations; structured shirts in poplin cotton that blends and speaks with the iconic “maiolica“print, presented in a blue geometrical version. Each shape, each outfit exudes a harmony and reflects the inspiration.

The boundaries are continually pushed to new levels with the production of each collection. With Sicilian traditions, skills and crafts always taking the spotlight through bold exploration of new fabrics created with techniques that are as old as time itself. As a result, the pieces within the SS21 collection are worthy of their label, given the values that underscore the distinctive principles of fatto a mano.
