HAUTE FUTURE

Xiaomi 11

Given the sometimes obsessive way that analysts compare Samsung to Apple smartphone sales, it’s easy to consider the Cupertino tech company to be the Korean Chaebol’s biggest competitor; but realistically, not many are taking the hassle to switch between iOS and Android with every new phone. In terms of volume, one could make the argument for Huawei, but in terms of innovation and price point, Xiaomi comes to mind.

Its latest flagship Mi 11 smartphone is well built and solidly designed. Possessing a large 6.8-inch screen, into a relatively compact and honestly, svelte 8.1mm thick form factor makes this the most appropriate fashion (or fashionable) accessory outside of an iPhone.

A curved LTPO OLED panel with 3200 x 1440 resolution punches in Samsung’s flagship S21 ultra’s weight class reproducing images that are sharp and smooth, coupled with excellent contrast and colour reproduction even on sunny days.

Mi 11’s camera system is exceptional but that is not entirely a hardware advantage. It uses a 108-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX from its predecessor model but the software “AI imagine engine” makes it possible to take exemplary low light and “telemacro” images backed by a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor. The great thing for watch lovers? The Mi 11’s 5-megapixel 50mm-equivalent unit autofocuses on details accurately making it easier to capture fine watchmaking elements, or if you’re a foodie, amazing food shots for Instagram.

Harman Kardon speakers give the phone deceptively outsized sound despite its 196g lightweight form, making it great for media consumption: for this review, listening to podcasts over the sound of the rain-shower in the morning. Given all these features, it is somewhat a nitpick to mention that battery life from the 4,600mAh power pack barely makes it a full day on heavy use, but is more than adequate for the work day when you’re not taking that many snaps, or binge watching YouTube and Netflix.

We live in the 21st century, when tech products should not just be functional, but also change the way we live
