Nope, these aren’t weird, over­sized toad­stools. They are a group of rock struc­tures called ‘hoodoos’, which started form­ing more than 100 mil­lion years ago. The col­umns, which are lo­cated in Utah’s Grand Stair­caseEs­calante Na­tional Mon­u­ment, are made of soft white sand­stone that has slowly eroded away over the years, leav­ing caps con­sist­ing of a type of

harder brown sand­stone.
