Beyond Horizons

The Power of Determination

Your teachers have probably helped you to set aims and goals to achieve throughout the course of the year; small progressive steps that will culminate in your success. As you take these little steps, don’t forget one important ingredient – determination. This is one of the most important qualities you will need to develop in order to achieve your dreams.

Often, you will find that you can’t muster the desire to do the necessary. Everyone faces this downturn in their motivation. Sometimes life just gets in the way of what we need to do. Should we continue to study when our best friend calls us on the phone? Only you can answer that question. Do you think you deserve a break? Can you regain your focus easily after stopping to answer the call? Sometimes you just have to be persistent about the things that matter most. Prioritise what needs to be done and keep at it once you’ve started. You must be persistent to transform good actions into habits. Once they become habits, you will find it easier to repeat them consistently. It is this persistence in the face of adversity, temptations and challenges that gets you closer to achieving your dreams.

Certainly, there will be times when you will feel like giving up and doing something that is a lot more fun or entertaining. Stop yourself and ask this question:

“Am I sabotaging my dreams?”

In other words, are you putting off doing something that has tremendous long term

rewards for short term gratification? You must be determined and refuse to settle for anything less than your dream. Know that the longer you persist, the more likely your dream will come true.

Disappointments and challenges are inevitable no matter how much you plan for success. It is how well you bounce back from these discouragements that determines your future. In the end, you must deserve every success you get and in overcoming the odds, you will find success that much sweeter. Remember, every adversity is a test of your determination to succeed. Take each one as a test of your resolve and turn them into worthwhile lessons that strengthen you as you make difficult choices in life.
