The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)

-

If you are ready for the adventure of a lifetime, than by all means, open up a copy of The Lightning Thief and get ready to be sucked into a high powered adventure that will leave you begging for more. And you can get more, as this is one of 6 book in a series. The hero of this story is Percy Jackson, a seemingly average twelve year old boy who suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia and is forever getting in trouble over mishap or another. He attends Yancy Academy where he is befriended by another child by the name of Grover and a teacher who becomes an unlikely ally, Mr. Brunner. These new friends are not who they appear to be and Percy soon finds out that he is not a bad kid as he has always assumed, but he is actually pretty special. It turns out that his mother is a regular old human woman while his father is a Greek God; and not just any Greek God, but Poseidon, ruler of the water and sea. Having this type of parentage makes awkward, always in trouble Percy, a demigod and the target of some pretty nasty creatures. Once he makes this revelation, it is not long before danger comes bounding along and Percy must flee the human world to live and train at Camp Half-blood. Here he meets other “people” just like him who have one parent who is a Greek God or Goddess. For a time he feels safe among his new friends but that feeling quickly ends once the thunderbolt of Zeus is stolen and Percy is framed for this crime. Though Percy is not the thief, Zeus does not believe his innocence and thus young Percy must go on a dangerous quest to find out the truth and reclaim the thunderbolt. If he fails, the Gods will war with each other, and in the process, Mount Olympus will be destroyed which will in turn destroy the Earth. He has only ten days to accomplish his mission and on the way, he must confront and beat some of the worst mythical creatures that ever were.. In the end, you will be truly surprised by whom the lightning thief really is and the things that Percy must do to set things right with the Gods. This story is about adventure, courage and finding out what you are made of. It is also about the yearning for the love of a parent and this shows though when Percy comes face to face with his God father from who he wants love and acceptance. With this tale you can explore the realms of family and friendship as well as courage and heroism. Parents will love the fact that there are solid lessons to be learned from The Lightning Thief and children will love that it has huge and horrific monsters and lots of edge of your seat action. So, pick this book up and when you are through, head to the library to get a copy of the book two in the series to see what happens next.
