Keep Calm and Chinchillin’ On
With a small body, soft fur and bushy tail, the cuddly Chinchilla is one of the world’s most popular pets.
There are two breeds of Chinchilla, the Chinchilla Lanigera and Chinchilla Brevicaudata, both of which are native to South America. Translated to “Little Chincha” in Spanish, the Chinchilla is named after the Chincha Indians, who hunted the furry mammals for clothing and food. Said to have one of the rarest fur in the world, demand from the European and American markets in the 19th century drove the Chinchilla population to the brink of extinction. To protect the Chinchilla, the South American government imposed a ban on hunting the furry critters.
