NEW EXHIBITIONS
London's line-up of exhibitions this year includes major retrospectives, from Frida Kahlo to Joan Jonas.
ALL TOO HUMAN BACON, FREUD AND A CENTURY OF PAINTING LIFE, TATE BRITAIN
This 2018 exhibition celebrates the painters who strove to represent human figures in the most intimate of ways. There will be a large number of life art pieces by Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, as well as rarely seen work from their contemporaries, including Frank Auerbach and Paula Rego. Some of the work by Bacon will be on show for the first time in at least three decades.
JOAN JONAS TATE MODERN
American-born Joan Jonas was one of the most important female artists to emerge in the 1960s, noted as a pioneer of video and performance art. She laid the foundations of an entire genre, with her contribution to contemporary art recognised by a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guggenheim Museum in New York. This will be the largest exhibition of her work held in the UK, and the first time Tate Modern has ever shown a single artist’s work across all exhibition galleries.
FRIDA KAHLO MAKING HER SELF UP, V&A
This exhibition will be the first time artist Frida Kahlo’s personal collection is shown outside of her home country, Mexico. Frida’s self-portraits will be on display alongside her personal artefacts and clothing, providing a comprehensive account of her compelling life story. Frida’s work has been celebrated internationally as an embodiment of Mexican culture and tradition, especially by feminists who applaud her uncompromising depiction of the female experience.
LONDON NIGHTS MUSEUM OF LONDON
This new photography exhibition will examine what London looks like at night, from the bright grandeur of Buckingham Palace to the intimacy of a passenger captured through a misty bus window. There will be over 200 photographs, ranging from the late nineteenth century to the present day, documenting an indepth story of a city that doesn’t sleep. Featured photographers include Alvin Langdon Coburn, Bill Brandt and Nick Turpin.
