Epicure

It’s smoking hot

For traditional Indonesian grill fare executed to perfection, a visit to Liap Liap is de rigueur.

From the group that brought you Bisma Eight Ubud and Folk Pool & Gardens, comes a modern Indonesian grill restaurant. Liap Liap (pronounced as lēahp lēahp), which means the crackling flame of charcoal embers, is a great destination diner to discover indigenous Indonesian cooking styles. Make your date night at the cosy rustic restaurant on Monkey Forest Road. Mismatched wooden chairs and rattan décor on the wall and potted plants lend a tactile and homey ambience to the interior.

An open kitchen at the entrance grills and smokes fresh produce from the archipelago. The chefs dole out delectable delights in sharing portions to curious and ravenous foodies. Created by chef-patron Mandif Warokka, Liap Liap showcases the unique aroma of wood-fired dishes. “Grilled foods deliver a robust flavour to our taste buds. It is smoky and fresh at the same time, creating an exploration for a wonderful culinary experience,” states Warokka.

Seafood gets bigger play at Liap Liap, and for a very good reason since Ubud lacks good seafood focused restaurants. Give the grilled soup in coconut husk Blue Swimmer Crab & Prawn “Crancam” Soup a go to start your meal. Share the grilled Catch of the Day with its accompanying sambal and vegetable condiments or the signature Bamboo Duck & “Nasi Lemang” Crackling Rice, where the rice is cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick. End the satisfying meal with the traditional Diamond Cake “Wajik Bakar”, a popular sweet snack made of sticky rice that is rarely find on the island now. Liap Liap
