What are some of the challenges you faced, especially with the prevalence of online shopping?

- PATRINA TAN, senior vice-president of retail, marketing and leasing, OUE

It is no secret that the retail industry is an extremely dynamic space right now, and evolving consumers are becoming more discerning and their interests fragmented. Retailers without online platforms are facing the need to find more innovative ways to engage shoppers. Manpower and retaining staff have always been an issue as well. The ‘digital versus traditional’ tug-of-war isn’t a war of two evils, it’s (about) a fundamental difference in inherent values. Online shopping is certainly gaining popularity, but it won’t replace physical stores – the role of the brick-and-mortar is to be the confluence of the physical and digital worlds.

There are experiences and personal touches that (people) still want – like services and entertainment – which e-commerce sites cannot articulate. Online becomes a real issue only if retailers do not repurpose to remain relevant to the lifestyle of the consumers, mainly the millennials.

Mandarin Gallery is constantly experimenting with new and innovative ways to engage our shoppers with pop-up stores and events built upon our ‘specialty’ positioning, and seek to offer our shoppers not only a wider variety but delightful experiences as well.

Tell us about a recent meal that blew you away.

I just had this omakase lunch at Takayama by chef Taro Takayama and his creativity in food is so impressive! Not only did I get to savour authentic Japanese seasonal flavours in its multi-course menu, I also got to see Takayama working on the elaborately prepared courses which look like pieces of culinary artisanry.

Where’s your latest haunt for a quick meal?

I travel between Mandarin Gallery and Downtown Gallery every day, and usually I would grab my new found favourite 3xgrilled Cheese sandwich from 6oz Espresso Bar at Downtown Gallery. The aroma of toasted bread and mouth-watering melted cheeses just makes my day.

What is your favourite foodie destination in the world?

I’d have to say it’s Singapore. Yes, you heard me right; it’s our homeland where we can find world-class chefs restaurants minus the tedious flight and travelling. Singaporeans, including myself, are such foodies and wellinformed of where to find the best Japanese, Italian, Hong Kong, French fare, and they taste just as good, if not better than the countries of origin.
