24 HOURS IN COLOMBO

Every time I’m in Colombo I will head to Botanik Rooftop Bistro & Bar, a concept put together by the creative guys at Cantaloupe. Go there at 5pm for an apéritif; I will usually choose the Hendricks tonic. The bar which overlooks the old Dutch hospital and Indian Ocean. Botanik is located on the 8th floor of the Fairway hotel and the sunset views always soothe the soul. They have this great “no freezer” concept for seafood and vegetables, and the menu is created by Rishi Naleendra, chef-owner of the now-defunct one Michelinstarred Cheek by Jowl. https://www.botanik.lk/

No visit to Colombo is complete without a drink in Travellers Bar at the Galle Face Hotel. This place is steeped in history and memories, dating back to 1864. The who’s who in entertainment have passed through its doors – many of whom are pictured on its walls. I love Pimms O’ Clock which happens daily at 5.30pm – a time-honoured tradition that celebrates the first crates of Pimms from England that landed there over a hundred years ago complete with a flag lowering ceremony and bagpipes. Retire to the air-conditioned inner sanctum of the Travellers Bar with the pictures of iconic stars, such as Roger Moore, Che Guevara and Vivian Leigh for company. https://gallefacehotel.com/

» STAY

There’s no accommodation in Colombo for me that compares to the Galle Face Hotel. A must-stay is one of the heritage suites overlooking the Indian Ocean, it’s possibly one of the only places in the world where there is a downtown capital city hotel right on water, where the crashing waves lull you to sleep. The rooms have been enjoyed by celebrities and royalty over the years and the service reflects the regal nature of the hotel, which is understated, prompt and gracious. https://gallefacehotel.com/

» DO

The wonderful architectural heritage of Colombo is much undiscovered. A ride round the city sights of former government buildings by rickshaw is a treat. You can also cruise up to famed architect Geoffery Bawa’s house. Or if the cricket season is on definitely catch a few others at Premadasa Cricket Stadium. For me, the place to take it all in and experience a city straddling a deeply absorbing historical past and a vibrant and modern future is a park called the Galle Face Green – which is right on the water. Buy a kite, fly it, see it soar overhead in the brisk winds off the Indian Ocean, pick up a few local snacks from local vendors, and enjoy the moment.
