Expat Living City Guide (Singapore)

Eleven years ago, we were looking for a short-term rental near my son’s kindergarten and my husband’s workplace. We liked the area and decided to buy our own apartment. This was the second place we viewed. It’s walking distance to my son’s school and has a great view of Malaysia from the living room and of Marina Bay from the entrance (we’re on the 24th floor).

In 10 years, we moved four times but it was always within District 10. I love being out of the city, having more space and seeing nature! We live near Dover MRT. It’s five stops from the city, and we are surrounded by a big forest and a park connector. Our main requirements were lots of natural light, and a big balcony with an unobstructed view. We are super happy here!

WHERE I LIVE IS CENTRALLY LOCATED, NEAR MY WORKPLACE AND CAME WITH A REASONABLE PRICE. I DISLIKE HOW HIGH THE RENTAL IS IN SINGAPORE, BUT IT’S SOMETHING YOU LIVE WITH.

Deborah Law from Expat Realtor found the apartment for us. It’s an old condo with lots of space and it’s very familyfriendly. There’s an Olympicsized pool and a great vibe at the condo, so it’s great.

We arrived in Singapore amidst pandemic restrictions that allowed only two unique visitors per household per day. Because of this, we couldn’t see most of the condos, even if they were vacant. Some offered video viewings, but it’s not the same, since you can’t really gauge the actual size of the rooms or kitchen. I love to cook and experiment in the kitchen, so a proper gas hob and space were a necessity, which was difficult to find. Also, our agent wasn’t really a gogetter. He kept forcing us to settle instead of finding us the right house, and the worst thing was he was a bit racist; he told us that a landlord rejected our profile because we were Indians. We were very put off by the whole incident and in the end decided to stay on at our serviced apartment. The facilities here are a bit dated, but the location couldn’t be better, the staff is very warm and friendly, and it’s spacious; so we signed a contract and moved our own furniture in.

How did you end up living in your particular house or apartment, and what do you love, like or dislike about it?

AFTER FIVE FUN-FILLED YEARS IN THE CITY, WE MOVED TO SENTOSA WHEN WE FOUND OUT THAT WE WERE PREGNANT. IT’S A FANTASTIC PLACE TO RAISE KIDS AND WE NEVER GET TIRED OF THE OCEAN VIEWS.

Our real estate agent (Margaret) found the condo for us in Tanglin Park. It’s fully renovated, but being an older condo, it’s larger than many of the new builds. We face out onto the swimming pool so it feels like we’re in a resort on holiday. We love it! Tim
