Expat Living City Guide (Singapore)
ISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Wesley Whitehead, American,
Grades 9 to 12 Science teacher
I’ve been living in Singapore and teaching at ISS for 15 years.
I most enjoy facilitating inquiry experiences that allow students to design and carry out novel experiments during units that require hands-on laboratory activities. It’s inspiring and motivating to observe students take ownership of the investigative process and create new understandings from questions that they have developed.
One especially memorable moment was when a student asked me to chaperone her and four other students at the WLSA conference in Jeju, Korea. This conference connects high school students from six continents, allowing students to meet with representatives of universities. I remember one of our students speaking with a representative from Drexel University. Eventually, that student applied to Drexel and was accepted and is now a student there. I’m glad to be able to support my students in achieving their dreams and goals.
THE SCHOOL SAYS…
As Singapore’s longest established IB Continuum School, we’re home to a community of over 40 nationalities. We’re a non-selective IB World School that excels with high pass rates and a large number of bilingual IB Diploma graduates. We support our students to realise their potential by nurturing and inspiring them to act with care, think globally and create sustainable change.
What’s new?
We launched the ISS Learning Accelerator Programme in August 2020 to assist students in determining what needs to be strengthened in order to reach their potential. Individualised learning plans span academic subjects, learning skills and community engagement goals, and student progress is measured with carefully curated achievement data.
