Breast Lumps Do’s & Don’ts

-

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BREAST LUMP

There’s no doubt about it – breast lumps can be scary. The good news is that breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, especially when detected at an early stage; and there are good, effective methods for early detection, explains DR ANDREW CLAYTON LEE, a breast surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital.

“Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it,” says Dr Lee. “Most of the time, the breast complaint is benign, and often due to a woman’s monthly cycle. However, it is always better to be safe and have peace of mind. So, do consult a doctor if you suspect a breast lump.”

This also applies to any other breast changes such as nipple discharge, and other changes to the skin and nipples.

“What often keeps us from seeing a doctor right away is our fear of the unknown,” says Dr Lee. However, holding off on that visit to the doctor will hurt your chances of potentially detecting breast cancer as early as possible. So, don’t wait!

“Getting your breasts checked is easy, fast and not stressful. “In Singapore, doctors will even have an ultrasound by the bedside so that they can scan your breasts during the examination,” says Dr Lee.

“In Singapore, we are also lucky to have superefficient x-ray centres. Quite often, we get the report on the very same day so that patients can have answers to their concerns without having to wait or stress.”

Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it.
