It’s no secret that Singapore can be an expensive city to live in. Where do you go to hunt down a bargain?

LOOK OUT FOR DEALS AT YOUR LOCAL RESTAURANTS. OTHERWISE, GO TO THE HAWKER CENTRES.

Wet markets, Sheng Siong, Little India and RedMart for groceries. Bugis Street for clothes and smaller items – even though I try to avoid fast fashion and prefer more sustainable items, you can get some really cool stuff here. Bulk food stores are great for smaller quantities and spices. You only buy what you need and save money by not paying for packaging.

Anything and everything is available secondhand. There are great treasures to be found on classified pages and marketplace apps!

DINE AT HAWKER CENTRES LIKE LA PAU SAT. MUSTAFA’S IN LITTLE INDIA HAS EVERYTHING ELSE! Nathan

For groceries, Bootle’s is amazing. You’ll find great quality items at affordable prices. For dining, go to the food courts as the food is cheap and you get a local experience. For fashion, there are a lot of thrift shops here. I sometimes go to New2u as all purchases help women’s shelters.

For homeware, Facebook Marketplace is amazing; people are constantly leaving Singapore so you can get barely-used furniture for cheap!

It’s easy to spend a lot of money in Singapore, but also relatively easy to find more affordable alternatives. For food, hawker centres can be amazing and you get so many options. You will be paying less than $10 for a full meal. Contrast that to some restaurants, where you can easily pay 10 times the amount. There are also wet markets for fruit, vegetables and meat, as a more affordable alternative to supermarkets.
