Expat Living City Guide (Singapore)

If you celebrate Christmas in Singapore, where do you go and what do you do?

Does it feel different to “back home”?

I ENJOY FAMILY TIME DURING FESTIVE HOLIDAYS; THAT MEANS HOME-COOKED FOOD (POTLUCK) WITH FAMILY OR EXTENDED FAMILY.

CHRISTMAS DOES FEEL DIFFERENT IN

THE TROPICS; WE’VE ENJOYED THE CAROL SERVICE AT THE CATHEDRAL, A DOSE OF TRADITION WITH LUNCH AT THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB AND THEN TAKING TURKEY SANDWICHES AND BICYCLES TO WATCH

THE SUNSET AT MARINA BARRAGE.

We spent a lovely Singapore Christmas at Summerhouse one year and The English House last year. It does feel very different to the US or UK for Christmas, but we make the best of it by spending it with friends, decorating a lot, and watching classic Christmas movies.

As an Austrian, I celebrate on the evening of 24 December – that’s the actual “Christmas Day” for me. The last few times, we’ve celebrated at our home. If we’re able to invite guests, then it’s friends and family, and the 25th is back to work at the restaurant for me (except if it’s Sunday or Monday, when we’re closed).

For big festivals and celebrations, of course one misses family. But our friends in Singapore have now become our family, and we spend the big celebrations and festivals with them. It’s a time of feasting, drinking and partying into the wee hours. Over the years, traditions have been set in place and we have been lucky to enjoy diverse festivities from all over the world. Christmas is usually at my friend’s place gathered in her huge living room that smells of the fabulous Christmas tree. The kids usually swim and then help cook the food over the barbecue.
