How did you get hold of it? This was on my book club’s annual list – a list guaranteed to throw up some surprises, and occasionally something truly captivating like this one.

What’s it about? It tells the story of Marvellous Ways, a hermit-like 89-yearold woman who lives in a caravan on the bend of a remote Cornish Creek. Set in 1947, it relates her chance meeting with returned soldier Drake, and the development of their friendship against a backdrop of their respective chequered pasts, interwoven with the complex characters they cross paths with.

How far have you got?

couple of days!

What did you think of it? Others have commented that it took a few chapters to get into the story, but I was hooked from the second page. The writing is magical, lyrical, almost poetic, and there are phrases – and a couple of whole pages – that I photographed to return to and read later. Most nights, I couldn’t put the book down – even though I knew I had to turn the light off and sleep!

Star-studded Glamour

French luxury timepiece brand Bell & Ross held a meet-and-greet with Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer during his visit to Singapore for the big race. Jolyon took part in the Batak Challenge – a test of reflexes and hand-eye coordination on a special machine – alongside six finalists. A cocktail reception followed, hosted by Bell & Ross CEO Carlos A. Rosillo and featuring high-profile personalities.

Bubbles and Bags

Dreamweave celebrated the arrival of its AutumnWinter collection of Campomaggi leather goods with a champagne reception at its Shaw Centre showroom. A range of Galimard perfumes from France were also on show.

Cycling On

In September, Treknology opened its Cuscaden showroom, offering the latest cycling equipment, plus handy services to monitor your training and improve your riding position. The opening event included the auction of the revolutionary superbike 2017 Trek Madone 9.2, with proceeds going to the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Women in the Workplace

Dress for Success Singapore celebrated its first year of operations with a networking fundraiser at Novotel Clarke Quay. The organisation’s aim is to empower women to achieve economic independence, and its next networking event will be held on 6 December.

A Concert of Note

The award-winning Australian World Orchestra’s recent concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall met with rousing applause, not least for “The Witching Hour”, a concerto for eight double basses by Australian composer Elena Kats-chernin that had its international premiere on the night. Business heads from top Australian companies as well as government officials from both Singapore and Australia were in the audience.
