A teacher’s perspective Name: Daryl Van Hale Role: Principal

I’ve been in Singapore for nine years and Principal at MSIS for just over two years. MSIS bridges the gap to other special needs schools in Singapore. We work to maximise each student’s functional academics in English and mathematics, as well as social skills and life skills. We work to individualise goals and objectives for each student to meet their needs, and move them towards becoming self-sufficient and independent adults. We work with about ten different specialists and collaboratively provide the therapy needed.

I enjoy providing the support a student needs to be able to grow and be happy. I love when a student begins to come out of their shell; progressing to be more sociable or more independent. The best part is when a student tells you that they love MSIS and its people.

A WORD FROM THE SCHOOL

Melbourne Specialist International School provides a performing and visual artsinspired curriculum and therapy services for children with learning needs. Catering to students aged three to 21 years, the school’s teachers, specialists and therapists work together to address the specific needs of each individual. Through the Victorian Curriculum F-10, our students gain vocational training in food and beverage employment and teacher assistant training, giving them the opportunity to gain work experience as part of their life skills programme.

WHAT’S NEW?

MSIS provides a holiday programme over some of the school holiday periods, with a variety of activities to keep students engaged and allow them to feel settled in their daily routine. The programme is open to all students, along with students from other special needs schools.
