A teacher’s perspective

Name: Gabe Haydu Role: Fifth Grade teacher

For the past three years, SAS has been my home away from home. As a fifth-grade teacher and the director of Jumpstart, our new student onboarding program, I’ve had the chance to connect with so many students in meaningful ways. I love getting to know the passions of each child and encouraging them to pursue their interests in a scholarly way.

When students feel known and cared for, they then become more invested in their education and grow exponentially. I also feel that teaching at a school that encourages innovation has allowed me to thrive as an educator and serve my students in a more effective way. Being flexible and adapting my teaching to fit the needs of each individual student is very important.

A WORD FROM THE SCHOOL

The Singapore American School vision is to be a world leader in education, cultivating exceptional thinkers prepared for the future. There are 375 full-time faculty members and over 75 percent have earned master’s degrees or Phds. Student enrolment is roughly 60 percent American citizens with 50 additional nationalities comprising the remainder. SAS has the largest Advanced Placement (AP) programme outside the US. Students enjoy state-of-the-art facilities on a 36-acre open-concept campus combining advanced technology, engaged learning hubs and a natural rainforest.

WHAT’S NEW?

Over the 2018 summer, an additional flexible learning space is being created in the Fifth Grade, providing opportunities for meaningful collaboration and exploration. It will model work environments of the future, featuring different spaces for independent learning, discussion, showcasing and presenting. 40 Woodlands Street 41 6363 3403 | sas.edu.sg
