Why do you choose to support United Women Singapore?

I’ve always been actively involved in charity work – both personally and through my company, Stones That Rock. I’m particularly interested in charities that support gender equality and opportunities for women. United Women Singapore strives to make equal participation a reality for women and girls, and it was the driving force behind the STEM programme in local schools, which encourages young women to take up science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects in their higher education and careers.

Glamorous Giving has been partnering with United Women Singapore since 2013. The fair is a way to raise the organisation’s profile while contributing financially to the important work it undertakes.

Tell us about the rebranding of the organisation.

Previously known as Singapore Committee for UN Women, United Women Singapore was a part of the National Committee for UN Women (headquartered in New York) for over 20 years. The committee held a mandate to raise funds and awareness towards ending violence against women, and encouraging economic empowerment and leadership. However, due to regulations by the local government on public fundraising, the National Committee for UN Women didn’t see this engagement as a sustainable model. It was then decided to rebrand the committee as a nonprofit organisation primarily focused on Singapore.

The new name, United Women Singapore, reinforces the commitment to the causes the charity has always supported. The rebranded organisation aims to drive better education and empowerment for girls and women.

What do you enjoy most about running Glamorous Giving?

Since its inception in 2013, the fair has grown to become one of Singapore’s most anticipated sale events. We first started in a friend’s house in Ridley Park with 15 local brands. Today, Glamorous Giving is a bi-annual shopping fest with more than 60 participating brands and a waiting list of 100 businesses hopeful of joining us. Companies get to clear old stock while contributing to our chosen charity.

Each edition sees more shoppers than before. The atmosphere is always fun and exciting, with brands offering incredible bargains and an eclectic selection of quality products. We carefully consider the mix of brands for variety, and by introducing new labels we can guarantee there is always something fresh to discover.
