Health Checks:

Four to get you started

-

Think you’re in the pink of health?

There are many reasons why we don’t go for health checks: not making time to, thinking we don’t need them or being too afraid of the procedure or results. Yet these checks are important no matter how old or young we might be – and they can help detect serious illnesses early on. Here are some key tests to consider.

#1 Blood pressure test

If your blood pressure is too high, it can make your heart weaker and damage the walls of your arteries, leading to heart disease, stroke or kidney disease. The test is quick and totally painless; a healthy reading should be lower than 120/80 mmHg.

#2 Cholesterol test

Cholesterol is a kind of fat present in the blood. If your cholesterol level is too high, it can build up in the arteries and lead to a heart attack or stroke. High levels of cholesterol don’t have visible symptoms and the only way to find out is to take a cholesterol test. Your doctor will take a blood sample, for which you’ll need to fast the night before, to get a more accurate reading.

#3 For the ladies: Ovarian cancer tests

In addition to a comprehensive pelvic exam, two other tests that are often used to pick up signs of ovarian cancer are the transvaginal ultrasound and the CA-125 blood test.

Prostate cancer has a high survival rate when detected early. Two main tests that doctors use are the digital rectal exam (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. The DRE is a physical examination, while the PSA is a blood test.
