Parents reflect on early learning

We find out about one early learning option in Singapore from the best fact-checkers around – the parents!

LAUREN and SAMMY VATRANO both work full-time, so it was important for them to find a school where their kids – Sawyer (7) and Brooks (3) – would be happy to go every day – a place that made them feel safe and nurtured. “We also wanted somewhere that would teach compassion and relationship building. Exploring through play and encouraging their interests was also a big one for us. And, of course, the ABCs, 123s – and a little Mandarin, perhaps!”

Their search led Lauren and Sammy to enrol both children at the Early Learning Center at Singapore American School (SAS). Here’s what they have to say about a few of the school’s key aspects.

CAMPUS

“The campus was a big sell for us – it really stood out. It’s a relaxing oasis for little ones, full of twinkling lights, exploratory toys, books and playgrounds; kid heaven!”

ENROLMENT

“We went to visit the school and then submitted our application. It was very straightforward. We were never really concerned about not getting in or having to put our small child through a ‘test’ that would determine their viability for the school.”

CHANGES

“There have been clear improvements in the kids’ confidence and learning after attending the Early Learning Center. We also noticed that there was an excitement about going to school and a love for their teachers. They love the building magnets, the monkey bars, constructing things and knocking them down again – and playing with their friends, of course. It’s great when your kids love going to school!”

TEACHERS

“The teachers are the best. Ms Nancy Devine, Mr Devin Bokaer, Ms Yukako Kawaguchi and Ms Lynsey Howitt have all been part of Brooks’ early learning journey. They’re all amazing people. I’m so thankful I get to leave Brooks with them every day.”

CLASSES

“Both of our kids adored Ms Laura Schuster’s Move and Groove class. She taught them about their bodies and the benefits of being active! We’d also like to mention the teaching assistants like Ms Siti who had Sawyer in her class three years ago – she still asks me about her. There’s also Ms Mas and Ms Fiza who still give Brooks a big hug whenever they see him around. I’m so grateful for all of them – what a great start to our children’s education!”
