Bakalaki Greek Taverna

-

This Tiong Bahru gem has a great vibe with warm, unpretentious service that’s only made better with delicious food. There’s alfresco dining available on the patio, and a light and airy indoor dining room decorated with wooden furnishings and earthy tones.

Start with pita and one or more mezze spreads – definitely try the melitzanosalata agioritiki ($14.90), a smoky eggplant spread with red peppers, garlic and extra virgin olive oil – and don’t miss dousing your bread in the to-die-for oil imported from Greece. Do save room for other appetisers, like the keftedes (beef meatballs; $16.90) and the deliciously salty, grilled halloumi cheese with oregano and tomatoes ($16.90). For something lighter, order a side of horiatiki ($20.90), a traditional Greek salad of fresh veggies, kalamata olives, feta cheese and extra virgin olive oil.

For mains, there are plenty of meat options, from kebabs and gyros, to a moussaka ($25.90), a traditional recipe featuring baked casserole of minced beef, eggplant, potato and creamy béchamel. Alternatively, enjoy a spread of meats with the sharing platters ($97.90 to $188.90) for two to four people. The seafood selection doesn’t stop short either; highlights include the htapodi ($32.90) – perfectly grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil.

For dessert, a top pick is the baklava ($14.90), a glorious combination of filo pastry stuffed with walnuts, and infused with cinnamon, cloves and Greek honey syrup.
