Let’s Talk Tacos:

Two Tex-Mex restaurants to try

-

Guzman y Gomez

Originally from Sydney, Australia, popular restaurant chain Guzman y Gomez first made its way to Singapore in 2013. Since launching its first location in Asia Square, the Singapore team has expanded to 13 outlets island-wide, including Orchard Gateway and The Star Vista. Guzman y Gomez’s latest and largest outlet at Serene Centre (#01-02) offers a more extensive selection of alcohol, including draft beer. The casual diner is also home to Cafe Hola, a concept café offering breakfast and all-day, barista-made coffee priced from $2. With its 110-seater capacity, the spacious area boasts alfresco seating and a play area for kids, too!

The food menu is simple, straightforward and affordable, with a focus on the ingredients, which are freshly prepared instore daily. For a quick and easy meal, go for the burrito ($10.90) or nachos ($13.50), or treat yourself to the enchilada ($14.90), which consists of your favourite burrito topped with salsa, sour cream, guacamole and melted jack cheese – yum! Then take your pick from seven delicious fillings, including grilled chicken, grilled steak, slowroasted pork, pan-seared barramundi and sautéed vegetables with guacamole.

Still hungry? Make your meal complete by topping up $3.90 (small) or $5.90 (regular) for fries and a soft drink. For dessert, a musthave are the oh-so-popular churros with GYG homemade Dulce De Leche ($3.95). Friedto-order and then rolled in cinnamon sugar, these make the perfect treat to end your meal!

Platypus Cantina

This hip East Coast joint offers pocketfriendly Mexican-inspired dishes with a local twist. On top of the usual suspects of soft tacos, “overloaded” burritos ($16.90) and quesadillas ($12.90), you’ll also find a wide selection of pastas, burgers, salads and grilled meats on the menu.

If you’re dining in a group, the tortilla sharing platters are great fun. The 12 Naked Tacos ($42.90), which feeds two to four people, includes 12 tacos with four signature fillings (fish, carne asada, pork carnitas, pollo asado) and a generous serving of fresh guacamole. For parties of three to four, there’s also the family-style burrito and taco party ($64.90), which lets you build your own tacos and burritos with three yummy meat selections and a myriad of accompaniments like black beans, Spanish rice, fajita veggies and pico de gallo.

Wash your meal down with a margarita (or three!); expect innovative flavours like the Pineapple Supreme ($12), a zesty tipple of muddled pineapple, tequila, Cointreau, lemon juice, citrus and agave. Alternatively, easy-drinking Cantina cocktails like lychee sangria ($12) and elderflower mojito ($12) will complement the hearty Mex fare.

Feeling the late-night munchies? Check out Platypus Cantina’s Supper Club menu, which runs from 10.30pm to 2am every Friday and Saturday. Must-tries include the Cantina waffles ($15.90), available in sweet flavours like the Katong Pie: pandan waffles with gula melaka, coconut cream, coconut sorbet, nuts and berries. There’s also a neat selection of mocktails ($9) to choose from – the Sloppy Ginger, a mix of cucumber, honey, mango, ginger, lemonade, is a popular pick.
