Trimmings

- Leanda Rathmell

Going strong since 2008, this Dempsey pamper retreat has gained a loyal following with expats and locals alike – and it’s no wonder. Simply put, the team at Trimmings Salon & Spa are the pros that your tresses can trust.

Just like my previous visit, my consultation started well before I walked through the door, with my stylist Ivan asking for some pictures of my current hair and my desired outcome. With my birthday creeping up and the grey hairs multiplying at an alarming rate, I was keen for a refresh to get some healthy colour and dimension back in. We agreed on keeping things natural – a healthy brunette base and gentle half-head highlights that would catch the summer sun. And, knowing that my visits are often few and far between, he promised to start the highlights at various lengths, creating a subtle balayage effect that means the roots aren’t too obvious during regrowth.

With a book in hand and relaxing Bali vibes streaming through the stereo, Ray sets to work. Using the “foilyage” technique of combining traditional foils and the balayage painting technique, he leaves the colour to develop, checking it meticulously throughout. My hair is then washed and left to rest in the basin with a toner that’s used to counter any brassy undertones. What follows is always my favourite part – a sensational head and back massage that never fails to put me into a trance. Finally, it’s a quick trim and dry and some dinner-ready curls, and I’m a new me.
