Beyond the ’Hood

-

What are your favourite Singapore spots for taking out-oftown guests?

Gardens by the Bay – it’s a great place to wander amongst the amazing flora and the futuristic backdrop of Marina Bay Sands. We always end up having local food at the fantastic hawker centre there. We love Pulau Ubin and Sister Island (where we got married) – you can take fun boat rides and they provide a good contrast to the highly developed main island. Then there’s Haji Lane for live music, independent shops and great food.

When you’re in need of a dose of culture, where do you go?

To a few of Singapore’s great museums, with Red Dot being our favourite. We also love the architecture around Joo Chiat and the city. There’s a lot of juxtaposition between old and new here that works really well. Some of our friends have produced a magazine called Eyeyah! with really quirky animations and illustrations for children (and adults) – a kind of modern-day Dr Seuss. They often hold exhibitions around town, which we all enjoy going to.

If you’re missing home, what do you do?

Have a barbecue in the rain, burning sausages from Marks & Spencer while listening to BBC Radio 2!
