Lonely Planet’s Best Destinations for 2022

Looking for a travel experience that’s off the beaten path? Lonely Planet’s just-announced list of the most notable getaway locations for 2022 offers a number of surprises. Here we take a look at the top five!

-

Cook Islands

The only Australasian destination on the list, and perhaps an unexpected one, the Cook Islands are a favourite among Lonely Planet’s staff. The tiny island country is famed for its remarkable natural beauty, while Te Vara Nui Village is a leading cultural attraction offering an authentic glimpse of traditional Māori living.

Norway

The very image of Nordic beauty, it’s no surprise that Norway has landed itself on this list. After a few days in Oslo, head off the beaten path and explore the country’s western coast and visit quaint fishing villages like Kalvåg to take in its small-town vibe. You can also explore the country by train, taking a scenic journey on the Flåm Railway.

Mauritius

This tiny island in the Indian Ocean is fringed by gorgeous white-sand beaches that wrap around a thick jungle landscape. Base your explorations in the capital, Port Louis. From there, you can explore unique attractions like Chamarel’s otherworldly landscape, featuring hues of blue, red and yellow from volcanic ash.

Belize

Set between Central America’s lush jungle and the Caribbean Sea, Belize will stun with its natural splendour. Inland, you can try jungle trekking and river navigation, before exploring the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave. Off shore, you can dive the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve.

Slovenia

This picture-postcard European destination will appeal to all sorts of travellers. If it’s nature you want, stroll the boardwalk that winds its way through the mist-shrouded Vintgar Gorge. If you prefer to take it easy, explore the sights and sounds of the city’s exciting capital Ljubljana. Also nabbing spots in the top 10 were – in order from sixth to tenth – Anguilla, Oman, Nepal, Malawi and Egypt. It all sounds so good … we’re not sure where to start!
