These days, you can bid adieu to the traditional teeth-cleaning experience and say hello to a more modern approach that gets the job done gently. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a recent Swiss system that uses Airflow technology, warm water and powder to remove the build-up of biofilm – the sticky coating that covers your teeth that can cause gum disease and decay – even in hard-to-reach places. In fact, Dr Gerald Tan, who has a special interest in dental implantology and aesthetic dentistry, says GBT is a great precursor to dental implants and other treatments, as it preps the mouth with complete, pain-free plaque removal and strengthens the gums to keep teeth (or implants) in place. Dr Jaclyn Toh also recommends GBT prior to aesthetic procedures like dental veneers. She focuses on smile makeovers and cosmetic dentistry in her daily practice, and says patients can benefit greatly from GBT before veneer placement, as it ensures fresh teeth to work with and helps prevent future dental problems.
