The “alternative” urban explorer: AYAKA KATO

This 23-year-old Japanese arrived here four years ago to study printmaking at Lasalle College of The Arts. Along the way, she fell in love with – as she puts it – the side of Singapore that’s “not found in guide books”. It led this freelance artist to start her own Tumblr site (ayaka-katoh.tumblr. com), capturing everything from the abandoned homes along Old Airport Road to the now defunct Yangtze Cinema, which held the infamous honour of being the country’s last soft-porn picture house – all through the nostalgic filter of her Diana Mini camera.
