For her Fall/Winter 2018 collection, Tory Burch turned to the now 85-year-old New York socialite (and sister of the late Jackie O) for inspiration, so who better to explain her enduring fashion influence? DESCRIBE LEE RADZIWILL THE STYLE ICON IN A SENTENCE. “Lee is one of the greatest style icons of our time, and I love her company. She is also the queen of witty one-liners.” WHY IS HER STYLE PARTICULARLY RELEVANT TODAY? “I (always) design pieces that feel uncomplicated yet pulled together, a style that Lee epitomises. I distinctly remember what she was wearing the night we met (about 10 years ago, through a mutual friend): a navy suit, with her hair pulled back, (along with) these incredible bejewelled earrings. This sort of understated elegance was a starting point for the season.” HOW IS HER BRAND OF GLAMOUR DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF OTHER AMERICAN SOCIALITES OF HER TIME? “(It’s) timeless... classic and pared back – there’s nothing fussy about it.” WHICH WARDROBE ITEMS ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH HER STYLE, AND HOW HAVE YOU TRANSLATED THAT INTO YOUR COLLECTION? “We’ve all seen so many pictures of Lee through the years, and I’ve always loved her style: uncomplicated yet elegant, even when wearing jeans. The inspiration isn’t so literal though. It’s more the idea of effortless dressing.” PRINTS FEATURE PROMINENTLY IN YOUR COLLECTION. WHAT,S THE LEE RADZIWILL CONNECTION? “Our botanical Happy Times print is a modern take on chintz, interpreted in five colours across dresses, tops, skirts and bags. The name is a nod to the title of a book Lee wrote years ago. Together with Lee the person, everything evokes optimism.” WHAT ARE THREE THINGS EVERYONE CAN LEARN FROM LEE RADZIWILL THE STYLE ICON? “Always choose to see the glass as half full – Lee is an eternal optimist. Be stylish, but never flashy, and – perhaps most importantly – know how to have fun.”
