THE NEW EVERYDAY BAG: THE CLUTCH-TOTE

- – IJ

A fancy name for a foldover tote, because that’s exactly what It bag makers are doing with this handy, multi-hyphenate style now: fancy-ing it up. Take Givenchy’s Jaw shopper, which comes with a plush quilted finish, flat handles and a detachable pouch in a contrasting colour. Sacai’s teamed up with cult Shibuya vinyl store Manhattan Records to put a luxurious, pop coloured spin on classic record bags, while Chanel’s 31 is part tote, part clutch and part shoulder bag, thanks to hidden straps inside. The common material of choice here is buttery soft lambskin, so that it folds neatly. The size? Large, because it’s most practical for a dependable, all-purpose tote; thoroughly modern for an AM-to-PM clutch; and because honestly, anything smaller looks gimmicky, which was the issue with most foldover totes from before.
