THE HIP INVESTMENT WATCH: THE OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA
Every once in a while, Rolex creates an instant cult collectable by tricking out one of its signature timepieces in stones that mimic the shades and gradation of the rainbow. This year, it’s its famous racing-inspired chronograph; its bezel studded in 36 multi-hued baguette-cut sapphires. It’s not the first time that the model’s been given the treatment, but never has this highly limited edition adaptation felt more current. Cue Virgil Abloh’s rainbow-coloured runway for his Louis Vuitton debut; the rainbow pattern trend dominating this year’s street style; Instagram’s popular rainbow light filter; and, of course, the motif’s symbolism in these socially woke times. Add for the first time sapphire indexes in shades that match that on the surrounding bezel (read: rainbow too), and a bracelet in 18K Everose gold – the brand’s trademark pink gold alloy that contains platinum to help preserve the colour – and you’ve a piece that’s bound to be snapped up the second it drops.
