A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE
Sketches of special looks from the collections spanning the past two decades
FROM GIORGIO ARMANI FALL/ WINTER 2002
The zigzag embroidered jumpsuit is from what has become known as the “aviator” collection, on account
of it being inspired by pilot Amelia Earhart. It featured headgear of the sort worn by early fliers, and was characterised by an adventurous,
sporty elegance. The dynamic mood was enhanced by the use
of bold graphics—chevrons, zigzags and checks—which gave optical definition to the distinctive evening dress. —excerpt from “Eccentrico”
FROM GIORGIO ARMANI FALL/ WINTER 1993
The black velvet evening dress with its luminous red rose embroidery references Matisse’s prints and his representation of flowers. The roses “pop” from their dark background forming a pattern that can be read as an abstract as well as a depiction of blossom.— excerpt from “Eccentrico”
FROM GIORGIO ARMANI PRIVE FALL/WINTER 2008
A quintessential Armani theme is explored in this collection: the place where ideas of masculinity and femininity merge. This outfit embodies the notion of a femininity that appropriates masculine protocol. The black velvet trousers have a slightly raised waist and tapered leg at the hem, and are teamed with an exquisite white beaded shirt. The whole is a play on male eveningwear, but is designed for the most elegant of women —excerpt from “Eccentrico”
