Editor’s Letter

In this frenetic world that we live in, we rarely have time to reflect and assess before we move on to the Next Big Thing. But the impending close of this decade has forced me to stop and look back on what I have achieved in the past 10 years. I wanted to commemorate this with an extensive list of the decade’s top 100 moments across fashion, beauty, pop culture, social media and technology.

Some things were a given, such as the Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle phenom that forever changed the public perception of the British monarchy and spawned a whole industry dedicated to their looks and kids. Crazy Rich Asians thrust our city into the global spotlight, showcasing why we are one of the most expensive cities in the world. The rise and rise of the Kardashians, Jenners and Hadids, who have utilised social media to command millions of global followers who are addicted to their daily musings. Then, there are K-pop stars, K-dramas, K-beauty and K-cuisine... South Korean culture has infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives. See if you agree with our 100 Iconic Moments list on page 74.

This year also marks my 16th year at BAZAAR. My role at the title has evolved so much, in no small part resulting from the changes in the media landscape. I have learned how to turn my four years of TV experience as a judge on Asia’s Next Top Model into a digital education platform to help young design talent in Asia. We’ve mentored young photographers through our fashion photography contests, nurtured sculptors and artists through our BAZAAR Art Prize, and for the past six years, I’ve worked tirelessly to groom the next wave of the region’s young fashion talent with #BAZAARNewGen (page 186).

I’ve also turned our focus to what the brand DNA represents. The legendary Fabien Baron, together with editor Liz Tilberis, worked his creative genius at BAZAAR US in the ’90s to make this fashion title one of the greatest in the world (page 60). Baron’s vision continues to be a cornerstone of design on our pages today. He worked with many photography greats, including the late Peter Lindberg. In Singapore, we have had the pleasure of grooming talent such as star photographer Gan, who started shooting for BAZAAR Singapore more than a decade ago, crafting his own brilliance with magnificent lighting, graphic angles and an innate ability to make women look simply stunning. Look at his portfolio on page 100 as he turns his lens on this year’s edition of BAZAAR’s annual Most Stylish Women.

While everyone is out on a trend, Instagramming unicorns and playing rainbows, BAZAAR has remained a fashion thoroughbred, turning dreams and fantasies into reality. From the haute couture featured on our cover to the good buys in our Luxe for Less page, it’s all about a smart curate, a sharp edit and an informed mind. Enjoy the journey.
