The Power of 2

-

Sixteen years ago, we put Stefanie Sun (already one of the biggest music successes to come from our shores) on our cover and dressed her in Dior by John Galliano. Fast forward to today and we’ve brought the Sun back again—brighter, sunnier and happier than she’s ever been. She celebrated 20 years in the business last year but pushed back her special concert by a year due to the pandemic. So in a way, both BAZAAR and Sun are celebrating two decades of success together. On page 181, she talks candidly about the struggles she has faced during lockdown and how she garnered a whole new audience in China with her live-stream concert on Douyin, which was watched by more than 12 million people. Our other cover star, Qi Yuwu, who fronts our BAZAAR Man this issue, likewise is a veteran with more than 20 years in his chosen field. He has spent much of the past two years running, sunning and finding a new quest in his life as an actor. Seeking to reinvent his craft, he continues to appeal to audiences with hard-hitting roles. The father-of-two shows he’s still got it at 45, turning on the charm at our shoot and giving off cool, sexy vibes with just a glance—turn to page 143 and take a look for yourself.

To celebrate BAZAAR’s 20th anniversary, we commissioned 20 creatives to produce a special portfolio of covers (page 67), with the resulting visuals hailing from as far afield as New York and Greece. There’s also an A to Z rundown of BAZAAR’s greatest hits (page 92), two beautiful letters from past editors who looked back on their favourite moments with the title (page 98), and an intergalactic beauty spread that’s inspired by how we could look 20 years into the future (page 170). We played tourists in our own country too, climbing on board an open-top double-decker bus that drove around the city as we shot the season’s standout collections from that unique vantage point (page 198).

This commemorative collector’s edition has much to offer, not just presenting awe-inspiring photography and features, but also reflecting the zeitgeist across fashion, style, beauty and glamour, from the past to the imagined future.

Here’s to many, many more years to come!
