tale as old as time

Nik & Shaye

Nik Pham and Shaye Chin had a spectacular BeautyandTheBeast- inspired wedding at JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach’s dazzlingly romantic Grand Ballroom.

“Before I met Nik, I’d never pictured myself getting married. Her patience and love have really touched me.”

I used to own a restaurant here and would travel to Vietnam regularly to source for seafood. During one of those trips, I was introduced to Nik, who is Vietnamese, and was in university in Ho Chi Minh at the time. We met over a casual dinner with some local friends and felt a connection instantly.

A few months after we started dating, my business venture failed and I went through the darkest period of my life. Nik stood by me without a single complaint. That was when I knew that she was the one for me.

We wanted our wedding to be grand yet warm and light-hearted, and to be filled with people we care about. I made it a point to visit every table well before the photo-taking sessions. It was important that our guests felt appreciated and knew that we felt honoured by their presence.

We also had gin and whisky booths with connoisseurs manning both stations and recommending unique drinks. I know that Nik and many of our friends love a good cocktail and I wanted to give them something unique.

So, when I approached Andy Hodgson from Tanglin Gin, he gave me the wonderful idea of creating a gin infused with Nik’s favourite fruit − strawberries.

I engaged a designer to create the gin bottle label, and worked closely with Tanglin Gin on refining the taste of the strawberry gin. Everything came to fruition just days before the wedding!

For our wedding theme, Nik loves Beauty and The Beast, so we went with the iconic colours of blue and gold, and white phalaenopsises to create a wedding steeped in elegance and grandeur. Our tireless wedding planner, Cheryl Tan of The Wedding Concepteur, helped put everything in order. We could not have planned this in six months without her.

The first march-in was one of the most memorable moments. We were trying to look graceful while dragging the long train of Nik’s ballgown behind us. It looked beautiful in pictures, but we kept praying that we’d make it all the way into the ballroom without falling flat on our faces!
