READY FOR THE WEEKEND!

Theresa Canning Zast, creative director of Kate Spade Saturday, spills on the must-buys at the brand’s rst store in Singapore.

Kate Spade Saturday might have a famous older sister in Kate Spade New York, but it has won its share of fans since being launched in March last year in Tokyo. While both labels share a knack for bright hues and bold prints, you’ll find edgier separates like biker jackets at Kate Spade Saturday instead of Kate Spade New York’s girlie, polished dresses. Kate Spade Saturday’s prices are also approximately 50 per cent less than its sister brand. And here’s even better news: Saturday’s perfect-for-brunch dresses and versatile accessories are now available at its new store at Ion Orchard.

We caught up with the brand’s creative director Theresa Canning Zast while she was in town recently.

The Kate Spade Saturday girl…

is really cool. Like the name suggests, we design with the weekend in mind, so our stuff is really fun – think separates and dresses in bold colours and prints that we design in-house. The pieces might have simple silhouettes but they also have lots of cool details so they’re more versatile.

What are your three must-buys from the store?

I love our Slip Neck tee – just by moving the seam forward and the neckline higher, we transformed a basic tee into something that’s super chic. I’m also a big fan of the Let-Loose dress, which can be worn three different ways so it’s super multifunctional – I personally love it in the black and white stripes! My last pick would be Geometric Cocktail Shaker and Pitcher. They’re super edgy and will add pizazz to your dinner parties.

The Kate Spade Saturday signature is…

…definitely the Weekender Bag. It’s one of our bestsellers and comes in the perfect size for a quick weekend getaway. There’s a separate section at the bottom for you to stash away your shoes or dirty laundry, as well as a detachable compartment for your toiletries.

What are your fashion addictions?

I’m addicted to stripes – any sort of graphic print and I’m on board! I’m also big on versatile pieces, like our threeway tote, because you can rock it as a crossbody bag, a tote or a clutch.

What’s coming up for Spring/ Summer 2014?

We’re toning down the super-bright colours of past seasons and are going for pastel shades and a more muted palette. That’s something that’s a big trend on the runways too.
