As much as we like learning about new skincare ingredients, it’s always nice to see familiar ones on ingredients lists. Case in point: ceramides. These lipids, which occur naturally in the skin, help hold skin cells together, much like mortar does bricks. Used in skincare, ceramides are also said to strengthen the skin’s barrier, helping to keep moisture in and harmful bacteria out.

This orange-hued dessert lookalike is really an essence in gel form. It has two types of ceramides to keep skin’s moisture levels up, and is a delight to apply – its jelly texture absorbs quickly into skin. Its soothing rose scent is a pleasant bonus.

AIDS SKIN CELL RENEWAL Laneige Perfect Renew Regenerator, $88. LEAVES SKIN CLEAN AND SUPPLE Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Replenishing Cleansing Oil, $59.

We’re all for products that do double duty. The latest one we’re loving? This cleansing oil, which not only removes makeup but also hydrates skin with essential fatty acids. Spread a 20- cent coin-sized amount on the face, emulsify it with water, then rinse it off. This serum, a new addition to the reformulated Perfect Renew range, boasts two new active ingredients: galangin (an extract of the galangal plant), said to speed up skin cell renewal, and Advanced Ceramide Water, which moisturises skin and purportedly strengthens its barrier. The serum has a non-sticky texture perfect for our humid climate, and sinks into skin almost instantly, leaving it ultra smooth. Expect younger-looking skin that’s bouncy and moisturised.
