APARNA NANCHERLA

» THE STANDUPS (NETFLIX) Her tone is casual and ironic, she’s the normcore of comedy, and Nancherla specialises in dissecting the minutiae of life through her introverted personality. She suffers from social anxiety, a mental illness that she discusses at length, very funnily, in her shows: “I have social anxiety, but ironically, that’s the one people find most easy to relate to.” There are no histrionics. She just nonchalantly dishes on culture, with sharp observations on umbrellas after the rain, her minority status, and supermodels (she calls them “self-esteem pickpockets”). Her half-hour special turns into a dry presentation like a Ted Talk, and it’s short and sharp. Just Putting It Out There is an earlier release, well worth checking out. You’ll find yourself growing to like her droll delivery more by the minute. Good one: “I love rainy weather, especially in New York. The smells really open up, you’re like, oh, notes of diaper.”
