Andermatt is at the foot of the Oberalp Pass, the highest point on the Glacier Express route at 2,044m. After indulging in hot chocolate, fondue, and powdery snow, visit the Disentis Monastery, one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in the world (it was built in 720 AD).

Relax on the train as you speed past the white crags of the 10,000-year-old Rhine Gorge, also known as the Swiss Grand Canyon, the castle-lled region of Burgenland Domleschg, and the Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway (which has Unesco World Heritage status), before arriving at St Moritz.

The Golden Pass Line

This runs from Lucerne to Montreux, and takes passengers on the premium LucerneInterlaken Express over the 1,008m-high Brunig pass to Meiringen (home to the iconic Reichenbach Falls and the Sherlock Holmes Museum), Brienz and Interlaken.

While the Glacier Express takes you through a winter wonderland, the Golden Pass route traverses Alpine lakes such as Thunersee, storybook villages, and the idyllic farmhouses of the Simmental.

At Zweisimmen, switch to the Golden Pass Panoramic train for the nal leg of the journey. You will pass Gstaad, an upscale resort frequented by royalty, and glide through the vineyards of Lake Geneva, nally heading to Montreux, nestled against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-covered Alps.
