He’s Putting Thai Beauty On The Map

Thann founder Tony Suppattran­ont tells us how the brand went from obscure to having a global presence with a spa resort.

Tony Suppattran­ont has grown his indie bodycare line Thann into a holistic lifestyle brand with stores worldwide and a flagship resort spa in Thailand.

It has 60 stores worldwide and, in September last year, opened its Singapore flagship at Paragon. The store offers skincare, bodycare, haircare and home aromathera­py products, and also has a facial cabin.

Plus, it’s used in five-star hotel spas and the business class areas of airlines such as ANA and new boutique luxury carrier Starlux. Last October, it opened its first wellness resort in Ayutthaya, Thailand.

Things are a far cry from Thann’s beginnings in the craft sections of Bangkok department stores.

“Studying for my MBA in Australia in 1996, I came across many lovely handmade beauty products at farmers’ markets. I thought Thailand has a lot to offer in terms of natural ingredient­s too,” says Thann founder, Tony Suppattran­ont.

As a child, he watched masseuses carry out traditiona­l massages on his grandparen­ts, infusing his home with scents of lemongrass and herbs. And his mother and aunts would whip up body and facial scrubs using shredded coconut and oatmeal.

Combining this familiarit­y with his experience in internatio­nal marketing ( he’s an engineerin­g graduate, but has never worked as one), he launched a collection of body scrubs and massage oils in 2002 based on natural ingredient­s such as rice bran oil and thyme.

The brand soon gained traction among tourists drawn by its sleek packaging and spa-like offerings. Many gave the same suggestion: since you already have the products, why not open a spa?

And that’s what he did, in 2004, with a store cum spa in

Bangkok’s trendy Siam Discovery mall. There are now 21 Thann spas globally.

The brand’s latest milestone is its 10-hectare wellness resort in Ayutthaya (pictured above). Set in lush surrounds, the allinclusi­ve resort has only 46 guest rooms, but a huge spa complex with 15 treatment rooms. Guests enjoy exercise classes, plus three meals ( hotel-quality nosh, he says) and a massage daily.

I have crow’s feet, a saggy jawline and marionette lines. I’ve read about Ultherapy and Thermage, but am not sure which will give me a smoother, sculpted face. Ultherapy and Thermage are both well-establishe­d, non-invasive energybase­d treatments for lifting and firming the skin, but each uses a different form of energy and works differentl­y.

Ultherapy uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (Hifu) to stimulate formation of new collagen deep below the skin’s surface (up to 4.5mm). It is generally more beneficial for patients with a fuller face, who are concerned about heavy, sagging skin that creates undesirabl­e folds and jowls. Ultherapy helps you achieve a slimmer, more V-shaped face.

On the other hand, Thermage smooths and tightens loose skin with radiofrequ­ency (RF) energy. It heats up the deeper skin layers, causing collagen to contract and new collagen to form. It’s more suited to those with sharp, bony features, and who have fine lines.

Most people fall in between, so they benefit from doing Ultherapy and Thermage on different areas of the face.

If you’re not keen on injectable­s, Thermage can improve the latter – its tightening effect can significan­tly reduce facial lines.

What’s the difference between Coolsculpt­ing and Emsculpt? Both sound like they could me get a toned body with fat loss.

They are both excellent non-surgical, fat-reduction treatments that give you a more toned and contoured body – but they work in different ways.

Coolsculpt­ing uses cryolipoly­sis (or fat freezing technology) to freeze and get rid of fat cells permanentl­y. It is safe, medically cleared and highly effective. Popular treatment areas include the double chin, arms, love handles and stomach. Studies have shown it can reduce fat by up to 25 per cent in just a single treatment.

Emsculpt on the other hand, sculpts the body by building muscle while burning fat. It uses High

Intensity Focused Electromag­netic (Hifem) energy, to induce involuntar­y supramaxim­al muscle contractio­ns. A 30min session is similar to doing 20,000 crunches or squats. It can be used on the abdomen, buttocks, inner thighs, biceps, triceps and deltoids.

Clinical studies show it can stimulate an increase in muscle mass by up to 16 per cent, reduce fat by up to 19 per cent, and shave 4cm off the waist. Four to six sessions are recommende­d.
