MEET OUR JUDGES
This diverse group of 13 beauty lovers – dermatologists, doctors, celebrities and makeup artists, along with the Her World team – have diligently cleansed, slathered, primed and applied, to suss out the products that deserve top honours in the annual Her World Beauty Awards.
DR LYNN CHIAM
Even dermatologists have skin woes. Dr Chiam, dermatologist at Children & Adult Skin Hair Laser Clinic, suffers from breakouts too, and more so with maskwear. Her blemish-battling tip? Apply a thin layer of tretinoin-based cream at night to prevent whiteheads, decrease T-zone oiliness, and reduce the look of enlarged pores. You can also apply anti-acne cream on zits, before and after makeup.
DR KAREN SOH
Empowering women to be confident at every stage of their lives is what Dr Soh, medical director of Prive Clinic, believes in. She’s begun incorporating collagen supplements into her beauty routine “as clinical studies show significant improvement in skin hydration and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles”.
MONG CHIN
Beauty influencer and Youtuber Mong Chin spent 2020 taking care of her skin, applying masks diligently. Her skincare hack? Dabbing her face dry with a piece of tissue after cleansing rather than using her bath towel, which traps bacteria and may result in acne and clogged pores. “After doing this, I no longer break out as often.”
DR RACHEL HO
The dermatologist is like one of the girls. She’s concerned about maskne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and makeup transferring to her mask. Her pared down skincare routine focuses on preventive ageing and strengthening the skin barrier with ceramides and niacinamide, and she uses just eye makeup or base makeup with the lightest coverage.
LARRY YEO
Skincare – more importantly, a diligent skincare routine – is key when it comes to keeping this makeup maven’s skin healthy. His must-have products are sunscreen, which he emphasises needs to be applied daily, and brow products – “so that I can match my brows to my everchanging chameleon-like hair colour”.
MUNAH BAGHARIB
The actress and host wants to continue taking good care of her skin and hair, so she can age gracefully. Her new must-have is masks. “I discovered them only last year – they’re amazing as they add extra oomph to my skincare routine.” Catch Munah in Brian Gothong Tan’s play, Lost Cinema
20/20, at the Esplanade, from April 14-18, 2021.
DR TEO WAN LIN
The medical director of TWL Specialist Skin & Laser Clinic keeps her skincare routine minimal. “I don’t chemically treat my brows and have never had lash extensions – these damage the skin barrier and cause hair brittleness over time.” Instead, her must-have product is cleanser because her combination skin often gets sweaty and grimy in our weather.
MARIE SOH
Makeup artist and founder of 27A.co, Marie is a strong believer that beauty means being able to show who you truly are, both inside and out. But she admits that sometimes, she needs a little extra help. Her go-tos are concealer to hide dark circles and breakouts, and mascara to show off her lashes.
NAOMI YEO
The actress, host and singer loves her skincare, but she doesn’t just use anything. “If there’s a routine or a certain skincare ingredient that works wonders for your skin, you should stick to it.” Her top tip? “Be religious with your routine, drink lots of water, exercise well, and think of good things. Because what’s on the inside will show on the outside.”
MARY VICTOR
Being a Her World Beauty Awards judge has made the makeup artist realise that there are some great products in the market. Her ultimate faves include a serum that gives her skin a beautiful glow, and a stick foundation for a quick touch-up on the go. She’s just started a programme for professional makeup artists and makeup newbies.
OON SHU AN
The actress and host says being a Beauty Awards judge made her rediscover mascara. For more definition, she says to “really work it into the lash line”. She also recommends using eyeshadow to line the eyes for a softer, more natural look. Look out for the Samsung Short & Sharp Film Festival in May, which will be hosted by Shu Ann.
MELISSA YEO
Breakouts and dehydrated skin due to mask-wearing have resulted in this makeup artist downsizing her beauty routine to just sunblock, concealer and eyeliner. Her hopes for 2021? Better skin, as well as embracing the digital era – she has enrolled in a part-time specialist diploma in digital media communication.
NG YI LIAN
The Her World editor says she’s a “skincare nut”, and staying home more has made her more diligent about using facial masks and beauty devices. Her tip: “I place my hand and body moisturisers, and beauty devices, on my bedside table, so I can use them while I lie in bed watching Netflix.”
