Lyn Ng, wood artist and founder, Studio Mu Yu

-

I used to be a marketing executive. It was a highpaying job, but after three years in the corporate world, I found myself wanting to do something else that I was passionate about. I’ve always loved the touch and smell of wood, so I spent six months in Taiwan and learnt woodworking. I honed my skills at a local sustainable set-up that makes furniture out of upcycled wood, and three years ago, I decided to start my own.

At Studio Mu Yu, I bring in discarded wood pieces from carpenters around Singapore and make them into wooden jewellery and bags. I love the concept of telling stories through a brand, and today, I use my brand to tell the story of this forgotten material. I want to start making bigger pieces – and turn them into artworks that tell the stories of the carpenters that I have worked with.

I think is about finding joy, fulfilment, and balance in one’s daily routine. I’ve not thought about whether this was my calling, but I know that I enjoy every moment of the day that I spend crafting wood. It’s therapeutic.
