3 TIPS ON CREATING POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACT
Focus on your passion
“Our time is our most valuable resource, and we have to commit that time to something we really believe in. Dedicating seven years to serving underprivileged women and children doesn’t feel like service to me – I decided this would be my purpose, and focusing on it is what keeps me committed to this cause.”
Keep some emotional distance
“Think about it this way: If you’re too close to the wall, you can’t appreciate the piece of art hanging in front of you. I learnt this the hard way. Working with survivors of human trafficking took a very big emotional toll on me, and I thought I was being selfish if I didn’t try to save everyone. I became incredibly inefficient – not paying enough attention to people who needed help the most – and drained. It distracted me from making important decisions.”
Build your tribe
“Just because we choose to adopt a cause and champion it doesn’t mean we have to do it alone. Despite being a relatively reserved person by nature, I have met so many incredible people because of my work, and we bond over our shared beliefs. Having people understand why I care about something gives me a sense of support. We discuss ideas, and the collaborative effort fuels the passion we need to inspire others to do the same.”
