What do women want?
You know that old saying, “Men are from Mars, women are from Venus”? Kind of contrived and outdated in 2022, don’t you think? And yet, Reddit threads and popular memes “joking” about how complicated women are, and how men just can’t seem to get them, are still being liked, shared and commented on every day.
So, what exactly do women want? If you ask me: More time, money, fair treatment and respect in the workplace, and a whole laundry list of things that probably won’t fit into this page.
But don’t just take it from me. More than 6,000 Singapore women responded to our annual What Women Want survey on mental, emotional and physical health and wellness. Curious about what they had to say? Check out the eight-page feature (page 100) which includes an activity journal to help you set goals for the year ahead.
Every March, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated. At Her World, our mission has always been to uphold and uplift women, regardless of the month or day, but in line with the UN Women’s theme for IWD 2022 on “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, we’ve taken the chance to highlight the trailblazers who are literally shaping the future of our country, thanks to their work in food security, technology, environment and more (page 88).
Someone else who’s set on carving her own path is cover girl Tay Ying (page 36). No longer wanting to be seen as hanging on the coattails of her celeb parents, the 26-year-old actress spent half a year in China alone, as well as co-hosting beauty show Get It Beauty On The Road with K-pop star Sandara Park, before finally signing on with local broadcaster Mediacorp earlier this year on her own terms.
Oftentimes, I feel that one of the biggest privileges of being female is our amazing ability to be multifaceted. I never understood the notion of why an intelligent and accomplished woman couldn’t be sexy (page 46), or interested in the latest creams and nail colours (page 78).
We’re hard and soft, strong and powerful, and we love, grieve and feel. Regardless of whether we’re a boss, mother, wife, daughter, friend… What do women REALLY want? I think it’s the freedom to be who we want to be without being judged. Don’t pigeonhole us please, thank you very much.
