The Whole is Greater
(Than The Sum Of Its Parts)
I’ve been thinking about teamwork a lot.
Perhaps it’s the annual appraisal that’s upon me and my team, or how I’ve come to appreciate that having a few good friends who will see you through ups and downs is worth its weight in gold.
When cover girl Chriselle Lim was in town earlier in August, she was accompanied by her sister Jane, who also happens to be her manager in South-east Asia. Despite living in different cities back in the US, they’re obviously very close and interact with an easy-going banter that’s only possible with siblings who are fond of each other.
In our interview (pg 32), the social media star mentions that it was family that helped her pull through a difficult divorce. Once she was able to talk about her split openly, sharing her experience and raw emotions with her 1.4 million followers on Instagram, too, was another outlet for growth and healing.
Having a strong support system is key to developing grit and resilience. Not everyone might be fortunate to come from a loving home, but choosing your tribe, and who you spend precious time and energy on, is so important.
On a more light-hearted note, perhaps keeping an emotional support pet might help! There’s been an increasing trend of Singaporeans keeping poultry as pets (pg 94). If that’s something you’ve been thinking about, find out more about how and why birds may be ideal companions.
But if there’s one thing one should not do, it would be to air one’s dirty laundry on social media, especially when it’s job-related. HR experts tell us why it’s wise to err on the side of caution, especially if you’re unsure of your company’s social media policy (pg 82).
