Home & Decor (Singapore) - - Editor’s Note - YOUNG LIM EDITOR

I remember thumbing through the pages of Home&Decor as a child, and tearing out pictures of modernlooking interiors. Those tear sheets would then go into a scrapbook I kept by the bed.

Growing up, it was the dream of getting to design and style my own home that made me a faithful subscriber to the magazine. As there weren’t many titles covering local home designs back in the early ’90s,

Home&Decor became my go-to guide whenever I wanted to learn more about how other Singapore homes looked, aside from my own.

Home&Decor was my reprieve, even as I was pursuing my degree in psychology. Somehow, reading insights on home decorating and picking out tips on styling spaces made me happy and opened my eyes to another universe, one lled with colours, designs, materials and textures. And as we celebrate this magazine’s 30th anniversary, I suspect that I’m not the only one with such sentiments.

In my role as editor, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting readers and followers of our social media accounts. It’s always heartening to hear how the magazine served as inspiration for them when they were decorating their homes, or nding cool and chic places to visit. One encounter, in particular, is etched in my mind.

Following an online showcase of a home we had featured in our print edition some 20 years ago (as part of our anniversary celebration), a woman in her 80s called to inform me that she was the owner of the home. She had purchased it with her husband after getting married, and it had been their cherished family nest until his demise. She was glad that it had been documented for posterity. Even though she’d lost the print copy of the issue, she can now head to our website to show her grandchildren what their grandparents’ home used to look like.

In that same breath, I believe reaching this milestone is possible only because of the people who make, use and enjoy good design. It is with your support, that we are able to stick around, through trends new and old. On behalf of my entire team, I thank you for allowing us to be a part of your design journey.
