Fred Perry presents its 13th capsule collection with Raf Simons. By Rachel Ang & Vincent Loh
The first- ever Fred Perry and Raf Simons came in the form of the Autumn/ Winter capsule collection in 2008. Shortly after its release, it started gaining global popularity. Since then, the power duo has continued its highly successful partnership to design more garments. Now, the sports- influenced British brand and legendary Belgian fashion designer come together once again to present the latest Raf Simons X Fred Perry Spring/summer 2016 capsule collection.
An essential part of a successful collaboration lies in the designer’s understanding of the brand’s signature style. Through the various capsule collections generated for Fred Perry, Simons has demonstrated his clear grasp of Fred Perry’s design aesthetics. The brand’s style typically references the subcultures of past and present, and is heavily influenced by vintage British sportswear. It’s then up to Simons, who is known for his experimental and minimalistic approach, to infuse a personal and contemporary touch into the classic Fred Perry offerings.
Heavily inspired by modern art and music, the 11 looks in this collection include striped pique shirts, zip front chevron pique shirts, insert T-shirts, and sweaters. More often than not, they feature bold graphic statements that are mainly rendered in bright secondary colours. A key piece introduced in the collection is a drop- neck T-shirt that plays on proportions and sits wider on the body than previous T-shirts. A special monogram of Raf Simons and Fred Perry is embroidered on the left side of the garments.
