As guardians of the health and wellbeing of our pets, we want what’s best for them in terms of good food and medical care; play, acceptance and compassion by others.

And, in this age of isolation, we want what’s good for ourselves as well – especially our health and immunity, given the current situation with Covid-19.

Here’s where our pets come in. It appears that they are giving us far more than just companionship. Yes, the health and wellness of our pets contribute back in equal measures, to our health and wellness too.

It’s more than just psychological benefits: Reports show that animals lower the risk of developing allergic diseases, and exposure to pets may influence specific aspects of the immune system. One showed that after petting a dog, people had a significant increase in levels of an immune antibody called IgA, a key player in our immune defence.

Another, a 2019 review of data from over three million people revealed that owing a dog reduced the risk of dying by 24 percent over a 10-year period. Even their bugs (microbes actually), can affect our immunity – all in a good way. Enough about us, now back to what’s more important – our pets.

To keep our pets in the pink of health, the answer lies in staying informed. Besides good nutrition and health care, one of the best gifts you can give to your pet is the commitment of being a wellinformed owner.

Read and stay informed for their overall goodness.
