The learning revolution – exploring the role of online learning in education
Trend of Online Learning
Singapore has always been known as an academically driven country that provides fertile ground for world-class education.
With the advent of new developments in the information technology and communication systems, coupled with the growing education technology (edtech) globally, a new paradigm change for knowledge delivery — online learning — has become a popular tool in higher education.
In most cases, online learning includes Internet learning, virtual learning, computer-assisted learning, Web-based learning, and distance learning.
Based on the studies done by global research firm Research and Markets, they show an increasing trend in the use of online learning in education that enhances the growth opportunities in education technology market.
Interestingly, the global educational technology market crossed $17.7 billion in revenue in 2017 and is expected to grow to $40.9 billion by 2022, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 18.3 percent.
“Edtech in Singapore has evolved. In the early days, it was limited to online content access. Today, edtech has grown to include learner data analysis, gamification, social learning, and personalized learning solutions to help students learn more efficiently,” says Shivanu Shukla, CEO and co-founder of edtech firm Teamie.
Why Online Learning in Education is Important
Online learning gives flexibility in learning and accessing materials according to students’ needs. Compared with traditional courses, online learning provides more interactive materials that allow easy access to information and feedback for students, all at their fingertips. In other words, students can participate in learning regardless of geographic location, independent of time and place.
Currently, most universities in Singapore have incorporated online learning in their teaching to accommodate the diverse needs in learning. Studies have shown that many college students have experienced online learning either delivered completely online or through hybrid models that combine face-to-face learning with an online component.
